Aktham Abdulhamid

Aktham Abdulhamid

Aktham Abdulhamid (b. 1955, Jabla, Syria) is a distinguished Syrian sculptor whose work explores the relationship between cultural heritage, mythology, and contemporary sculptural expression. He graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University, in 1981. He later established the Sculpture Department at the Institute of Applied Arts in Damascus, where he also served as an educator and administrator.

Abdulhamid’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in the ancient civilizations and cultural traditions of the region. Drawing inspiration from Syrian mythology, historical symbols, and traditional art, he has developed a distinctive sculptural language that reinterprets heritage through modern techniques. Rather than reproducing historical forms, he distils them into simplified, expressive shapes that connect the past with contemporary artistic sensibilities.

Working primarily with wood and stone, Abdulhamid explores the expressive potential of material, volume, and texture. The human figure, particularly the female form, occupies a central place in his practice, often transformed into symbolic representations of memory, identity, motherhood, and the cycles of life. His sculptures balance abstraction and figurative presence, combining a sense of monumentality with emotional depth.

Throughout his career, Abdulhamid has participated in exhibitions, biennials, and international sculpture symposiums across the Middle East and Europe. His works are represented in public collections, including the Syrian Ministry of Culture and the National Museum in Damascus, as well as private collections internationally. He also played a leading role in developing the Syrian sculpture gardens in Almuñécar, Spain, a cultural project that brought Syrian sculptors into dialogue with the region’s historical and artistic heritage.

Aktham Abdulhamid’s work offers a contemporary interpretation of Syria’s cultural memory, transforming ancient references into a living sculptural language that connects history, identity, and the human experience.
